Billy Graham
(Originally a post on The Swamp.)
I don't know about these other guys
There's something in the back of their eyes
But Billy, you're the man
Who don't use sleight of hand
Ain't wearin' no disguise
I love you, Billy
I love the simple things you say
You never seem to get in the way
No one is quite like you
Passionate and true
Just as I am, I say
I love you, Billy
- Terry Scott Taylor, 1990
(And Franklin Graham, God bless him, just don't quite do it for me.)

i used to not be a billy fan but in the last week or so, i've read several good articles (including the couple you linked) that impressed me
and franklin, quite frankly, just pisses me off. tbere's a reason his father stayed on the down-low as far as politcs go and he's already screwed that up

Catie, you need to study your history. Not only is Billy not fundamentalist, he has made a point of pissing off the fundies repeatedly over history (and I link the above pieces for specific examples - here's another one that tells of Graham's link to Wheaton College and the closest thing we have to a proper academic journal of Christianity, Christianity Today.
Billy Graham is the quintessential evangelical. Evangelism means taking Christianity to people who wouldn't hear about it otherwise, and using their language to get the ideas across when necessary. Graham has made a career of doing this, and supremely well.
Of course, this also means he talks about other religions with respect and won't use the language that rings true to your garden variety Southern Baptist. Ergo, Billy isn't a "true believer." Or something. (I think the fundies started to fall in love with Franklin Graham about the time he started his Islam-bashing, not coincidentally.)
How much of this comes back to the idea that we get what an evangelical is confused with what a fundamentalist is?

Bah. While Catie's studying history, I need to be studying my HTML.
Here's what I tried to link above:

yeah that was my confusion, cause i read the articles, and i was all like, whatwhat? i thought billy was all fundie and whatnot... although you have to admit that evangelical and fundie are sometimes very close, and we know how wary i am of both of those ANYWAY... i'm not really an evangelical either... *shrug* i'm a bad christian, i know it, whatever.
and don't worry bout the HTML, pearson dear. ;)

I saw Billy Graham when I was like 8 or so at the Omni or something else big and downtown. Don't really remember much but it was fun. I went on MARTA with a big group of kids from the Chinese church that my neighbor went to. Fun times. Oh and I got a really fun workbook. But thats all I remember.
